Setting up a welding workshop
A welding workshop is only safe once everyone who works there or passes through it is protected. The welder has a helmet and protective clothing, but the colleague behind the machine, the trainee looking on or the fitter who just pops in: they do not wear that protection. They are, however, exposed to (UV) radiation, sparks and spatter. The occupational health and safety guidelines are clear: welding work must be enclosed.
What does a safe welding workshop need?
A welding workshop is a workspace where welding or grinding takes place: from a production cell in an industrial company to a classroom at a technical college. A safe welding workshop calls for several measures: good extraction and physical screening of the workspace. Cepro supplies the screening, in several layers, each aimed at a specific risk. Think of:
Radiation and spatter towards the surroundings: Welding curtains, welding strips or a mobile welding screen shield colleagues and bystanders. Curtains on fixed rails or a movable screen: the choice depends on your set-up.
Several welders at the same time: A welding booth closes off the workspace completely, including acoustically. Ideal in production halls and training rooms, where oversight and isolation go hand in hand.
Sparks on materials and installations: Welding blankets protect surrounding materials, pipework and equipment. They go where curtains cannot: close to the workpiece and in hard-to-reach spots.
The structure itself: Screening only works if it is properly hung. Special suspensions such as a concertina system or a cable reel keep curtains and strips in place, even with intensive daily use.

A welding blanket that is not within reach during production is impractical. Screening that slows work down gets bypassed, and so on. A safe welding workshop calls for several layers of protection: screening with welding curtains or welding screens, enclosure with a welding booth, protection of materials with welding blankets and a solid suspension structure. Each element covers a different risk.
The European standard for welding protection products is ISO EN 25980. This sets requirements for UV and infrared protection, fire properties and filtering capacity. Products that meet this are retested every five years and issued with a new certificate.
A welding screen is mobile and quick to move. A welding booth is a fully enclosed workspace, including sound insulation. Welding booths are the recommended solution for busy production halls, where several welders work at the same time.
