Smart separation between stainless steel and carbon steel production

In production environments where both stainless steel and carbon steel are processed, effective separation is essential. Even small steel particles can contaminate stainless steel and make the material unusable. Topec in Papendrecht therefore needed a solution that would safely separate the two production processes without disrupting daily operations. Following a site visit and close consultation with our Engineering department, Cepro developed a customised solution combining safety, flexibility and ease of use.

WHY IT WORKS
By physically separating the production of stainless steel and carbon steel, contamination of the stainless steel is prevented. At the same time, the solution provides greater control over airflow within the production hall.
A large part of the partition was designed as a sliding structure. This allows the separation to be opened easily when the overhead crane needs to move products, while the area can remain fully enclosed at other times.
A separate access point with transparent orange welding strips was created for employees entering the area on foot. This means the complete partition does not need to be opened each time, making daily operations faster and more efficient.
The situation

Both stainless steel and carbon steel were processed within the same production hall. Because even small steel particles can contaminate stainless steel and affect the quality of the material, a reliable separation between the two production processes was essential. The customer also wanted greater control over airflow within the hall, so that both areas could be managed more effectively.

The main challenge was combining safety with practical daily use. Large products regularly had to be moved from one area to another using an overhead crane. At the same time, employees needed to move easily between the two zones without opening the complete partition each time. A permanent wall was therefore not suitable, as the production environment had to remain accessible and flexible.

our solution

Following a site visit, the customer’s requirements were developed into a customised solution together with our Engineering department. A steel support structure was fitted with blue and transparent industrial curtains, creating a clear separation while maintaining visibility between the two production areas.

A large section of the partition was designed as a sliding structure, allowing the opening to be enlarged whenever the overhead crane needs to move products. For employees entering on foot, Cepro created a separate access point with transparent orange welding strips. This keeps daily movement between the areas practical without opening the large sliding partition.

Cepro managed the complete project, from engineering and design to delivery and installation, giving the customer one point of contact throughout the process.

A solution combining safety and efficiency

The project was successfully completed in 2020 and has since provided a clear separation between stainless steel and carbon steel production. This significantly reduces the risk of stainless steel contamination and allows both processes to take place safely within the same production hall.

At the same time, the workshop remains practical in daily use. The sliding structure makes it possible to open a large section of the partition whenever the overhead crane needs to move products. Employees entering on foot can use the separate access point with transparent orange welding strips, so the large opening does not need to be used each time.

The choice of blue and transparent industrial curtains also contributes to a pleasant and well-organised working environment. The production processes are clearly separated while visibility between the different zones is maintained. In addition, the partition makes it easier to manage airflow within the hall.

Above all, this project demonstrates that an effective solution involves more than simply installing a partition. By visiting the site in advance, carefully assessing the customer’s requirements and coordinating engineering, delivery and installation, Cepro created a complete solution that genuinely supports daily operations.

From the initial site survey to the final installation, the entire project was managed by Cepro. This gave the customer one point of contact throughout the process and resulted in a safe, flexible and carefully designed separation that fully reflects the way the production hall is used.
