Laser welding

Laser welding is gaining ground across the metalworking industry and beyond. The technology enables high precision and is increasingly used in series production. Working with class 4 handheld lasers does, however, carry a significant risk. The laser radiation produced falls outside the visible spectrum. Without proper shielding, this poses a direct hazard to everyone in the working area. Safe laser welding begins with fully enclosing the process. Cepro develops and supplies the certified solutions that make this possible.

Why do companies choose Cepro for laser welding solutions?

Consider the following reasons:

  • Certified shielding in accordance with EN IEC 60825-1:2014

  • Interlock, LED warning and laser safety windows included as standard

  • Suitable products for laser welding and laser cleaning

  • From initial advice through to on-site installation: direct contact throughout

  • Over 30 years of specialist expertise in welding safety and equipment

What is laser welding?

Laser welding is a welding process in which a concentrated laser beam is used to join metal components. In practice, this is carried out using class 4 handheld laser devices: the most powerful category of lasers, to which established safety risks are attached.

The process is being adopted ever more widely across the metalworking industry. That growth makes the question of safe shielding all the more pressing.

The advantages of laser welding

Laser welding offers high precision when joining metal components, making it particularly well suited to large-scale series production. Thanks to that level of accuracy, post-processing is barely needed. And compared with more traditional welding methods, laser welding is relatively quick to learn for operators and students alike.

Those who look into the advantages and drawbacks of laser welding consistently reach the same conclusion: the technology delivers demonstrable results, provided the working environment is properly shielded. Class 4 laser radiation causes immediate damage upon exposure, including to bystanders. Anyone deploying laser welding therefore invests in certified shielding at the same time.

Is laser welding always dangerous?

Not with the right shielding in place. With conventional welding, the intense light is visible, which immediately alerts anyone nearby. Laser welding is different. The light produced by class 4 handheld lasers is imperceptible to the human eye. There is no visible warning signal, even as exposure is already occurring.

Added to this is the fact that there are currently no consistent regulations prescribing how workplaces for handheld laser welding must be secured. Responsibility lies entirely with the employer. Individual protective measures such as goggles or screens provide insufficient protection for class 4 laser work. Fully enclosing the process within a certified environment is the only way to eliminate the risk. You can read more about the specific risks of laser radiation on our page about protection against laser light.

Laser safety comes first

Safe laser welding rests on one principle: the laser process must at no point be accessible to unprotected individuals. The Cepro UniSonic Laser Cabin has been developed from precisely that principle. A fully enclosed working environment with integrated safety features that together ensure the process remains contained, even during operation. How this works technically, with interlock system, warning signalling and certified laser safety windows, is set out in detail on our laser cabin page.

What makes this cabin particularly relevant for companies using laser welding is its versatility. In addition to welding, the cabin is also suitable for laser cleaning. That makes the investment applicable across more than a single use case. And when high-precision laser welding demands both complete enclosure and a clear view of the work process, this combination is exactly what is required.
