What should you know about using welding blankets?
Welding blankets are used to temporarily protect machines, floors, pipes and other surfaces during welding and grinding work. They help shield these areas from sparks, spatter and heat when surrounding equipment or components cannot simply be moved out of the way. Although a welding blanket may seem like a relatively straightforward protective product, there are significant differences in material, design and load capacity. At the same time, every working situation is different. The distance from the work, the amount of spatter, the temperature and the way the blanket is positioned all influence what is required.
A welding blanket provides local protection
A welding blanket is mainly used to protect a specific surface or component. Think of a production machine underneath a repair job, a finished floor below a welding area, or pipes and installations located close to the work.
It is important not to look only at the area directly underneath the work. Sparks and spatter can travel further. The blanket should therefore be large enough to cover the entire area where hot particles may land.
A welding blanket mainly protects the surface it covers or shields. If employees in the surrounding area also need protection from the welding process, additional shielding may be required, such as a welding screen or welding curtain.
Correct positioning is important
The performance of a welding blanket is determined not only by its material. How it is positioned also plays an important role. Welding blankets should be used at an angle of at least 15°. This allows hot particles to roll off the surface more easily instead of remaining in one place for a prolonged period.
Depending on the situation, a welding blanket can be placed over a machine or workpiece, suspended vertically or used to protect a floor or installation. Pay attention to gaps and openings and make sure the blanket cannot shift during the work.
Why are there different types of welding blankets?
The load on a welding blanket can vary considerably. A blanket that only occasionally catches sparks during a short repair is exposed to very different conditions than one used intensively close to the welding process.

Check the blanket before and after use
During use, welding blankets are exposed to heat, sparks, spatter, sharp edges and contamination. Over time, this can damage the material. Before use, check the blanket for visible damage such as tears, holes, thin areas or heavy contamination. After the work, check again whether the process has caused any visible changes.
Allow the blanket to cool and make sure no hot particles remain before moving or storing it. Dry storage, away from sharp objects and unnecessary loads, also helps prevent damage.
